History – Our Story

Flat Squirrel Scooters began with a vision that goes back to 1986 when a friend of Bruce’s bought a scooter. The scooter was a small 50cc Honda and capable of going up to 25 MPH with a single rider. This started a chain of events…

In 1990 when Bruce was in Europe it seemed that everyone had scooter. The streets were full of them; people not only used them as a fun vehicle but as a primary source of transportation for local driving. Since local meant within a 40 mile radius of wherever they lived, that was full time for many. Some Europeans enjoyed the ease of getting around, the ability to park anywhere and the very low fuel price. Others simply replied that they were very easy to store in a garage or even a basement over the winter, and a fun way to commute. A scooter was beginning to look like the perfect mode of transportation.

In 2005 Bruce and Christy were on vacation in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and came across a scooter dealership. Being conscious of the rising gas prices as well as affordability, they began getting serious about opening a dealership in the Chicago area.

Bruce began creating relationships with various manufacturers and import companies that work with scooters. They both worked hard to understand why some scooters cost $6,000 and others $2,000, and what contributed to those price variances.

At the end of their learning journey, they were able to choose a scooter manufacturer that embraces quality, selection and still has a great price. It was a true winning combination!

Then came the hard part – putting it all together in order to sell a product. Being the marketing savvy person that she is, Christy began to create an identity for this scooter company, including creating a name that would represent all the things that we wanted in a scooter company… quality, selection, service and fun. There were many weeks going back and forth until we finally agreed on the name Flat Squirrel Scooters – Big Fun. Little Wheels!

For six more months we grappled with locations, product lines, accessory selection, business plans, service agreements, variable expenses versus fixed expenses, banking challenges, transportation costs and warranties.

All this research has educated us so that we can offer you a product that you will be proud to own! Today we represent CF Moto, Genuine Scooter Company, Kymco and Lance’s Cali Classic.
