Below is a link to the Illinois DMV's handbook for motorcyclists and scooterists. This is a great resource for studying for the M Class license or just a way to familiarize yourself with the "proper" way to handle your scooter.
Maintaining Your Scooter:
Every 250 miles or every month:
· Check engine oil level
· Check tire pressure
· Check lights and horn
· Check battery level
Every 1000 miles or every 6 months:
· Change engine oil
· Check tires for wear
· Check valve stems for splits or cracks
· Check brakes and throttle operation. Lubricate cables if required
· Check all screws nuts and bolts and tighten. Especially check muffler and exhaust fasteners and front and rear axles
Every 2000 miles or every year:
· Change the transmission oil
· Check and adjust valve clearance
· Clean air cleaner
· Check and clean (or replace) spark plug
· Check brake linings.
· Check/clean/lubricate brake and throttle cables.
· Check CVT drive belt for wear and cracks
· Check wheel and steering bearings
Besides regular maintenance, be sure to keep your scooter clean! Although it may not seem like a big deal, the body of your scooter is very open and this allows dust and dirt to get into the engine and other major components. Whether you ride often or not, dust can settle in the engine compartment and cause some problems. Also be sure to clean off your brake rotors every once in a while. A layer of dirt or grime can seriously reduce your ability to brake effectively.
Flat Squirrel Scooters can perform all of these regular maintenance procedures - give us a call to schedule your appointment today! Our phone number is 847-915-3050
Scooter Riding Tips and Advice
Your Helmet
Many people are very misinformed on the drawbacks of wearing a helmet. Wearing a helmet actually improves hearing by streamlining the head and cutting wind noise. It doesn't just cover your ears like people typically think. Sure helmets can get a little warm, but advances have been made in helmet technology and some helmets are so well ventilated that it's practically not even there. National Safety Standards also require all helmets to allow a 210 degree field of vision. So it does cut your vision a tiny bit, but not nearly enough to not wear one at all. Obviously a helmet will protect the head if you get in an accident. A helmet will increase your chances of survival by roughly 37%, that's considerably better odds. So even though helmets aren't technically a law in Illinois, you should really consider wearing one anyway.
If you are planning on purchasing a helmet or you already have one, please check out this link! It explains what a DOT rated helmet really is. You won't want to get anything less than a DOT rated helmet after seeing this.
Group Riding
Riding as a group can be some of the most fun you will ever have, but it does come with its fair share of risks. If you have never ridden with a group before or if you are nervous about it, check out this video. It's about 10 minutes long and it will teach you several important factors about riding in a group.
How Your Scooter Works
All of the scooters we sell work using a CVT transmission, but do you really know what a CVT transmission is? Here is a quick video that explains how the CVT transmission operates. Very interesting!
